Figure 1. Study area of Toronto, Canada

The study area of our project is Toronto, Canada. We thought that traffic accidents were important to look at because traffic accidents are one of the most preventable accidents but they are also one of the most common accidents that also lead to death. We decided to address Toronto because the City of Toronto is one of few large cities that have freely, easily accessible traffic data about accidents. Therefore, we were interested in what this type of accessible data could then provide us to understand the spatial patterns of traffic accidents between total overall accidents and total fatal accidents to see how and what can the general public inform themselves on where or how traffic accidents and fatal accidents can be reduced. This type of analysis is also helpful in relationship to Toronto's own goals in reducing traffic accidents such as with Toronto's traffic calming initiative and their Vision Zero Safety Plan.
